Make a Cake 做蛋糕

Child: Mom, can my classmates come over to work on a school project tonight?

宝宝：妈妈，今天晚上我的同学能来咱家做小组作业吗？

And can you make a cake for us to eat while we work on it?

我们做作业的时候，您能给我们做个蛋糕吃吗？

We're going to need our energy.

我们需要补充能量。

Mom: Yes, your friends can come over.

妈妈：嗯，你的小伙伴可以来的。

I can make a cake,

我可以做蛋糕啊，

but you have to help me.

但是你得帮帮我。

Child: I've never made a cake before.

宝宝：我以前从来没做过蛋糕。

Mom: Then this is a good time to learn.

妈妈：那正好借此机会学习一下。

Put on your apron.

穿上围裙。

First, you need to cut pieces of parchment paper

首先，你要剪几张羊皮纸，

and line an 8 x 8 inch cake pan with them.

然后在一个8 x 8英寸的蛋糕烤盘上摆好。

Child: I did that.

宝宝：我摆好了。

Can I mix ingredients together now?

我现在能混合原料了吗？

Mom: Yes, that's the next step.

妈妈：嗯，这是下一步。

Put one cup of cake flour in a medium bowl.

把一杯蛋糕粉放到一个中号碗里。

Then stir 1 teaspoon of baking powder and ¼ teaspoon of salt into the flour.

然后搅拌1小勺发酵粉和¼小勺盐到蛋糕粉里。

The next part is tricky.

接下来的环节是个技术活。

Are you ready?

你准备好了吗？

Child: I think so.

宝宝：准备好了。

Mom: We'll need to separate the egg yolk, the yellow part,

妈妈：咱们要把蛋黄，黄色的部分，

from the egg whites, the clear part.

从蛋清，透明的部分里分离开。

Child: How do we do that?

宝宝：咱们怎么做呢？

Mom: Grab two bowls,

妈妈：拿过来两个碗，

and I'll show you.

我来教你。

First, you partially crack the egg over a bowl.

首先，在碗上把鸡蛋磕开个缝儿。

Once most of the clear stuff has drained into the bowl,

等大部分透明的都流到碗里了，

you move the yolk back and forth between the two egg shell halves

你在两半儿蛋壳之间来回来去晃蛋黄，

until most of the clear stuff is in the bowl.

直到大部分透明的都流到碗里。

Child: What do you do with the yolk?

宝宝：蛋黄怎么处理呢？

Mom: Put it in a second bowl.

妈妈：把它放到第二个碗里。

We'll need it later.

咱们一会儿会用到它。

Do that to four more eggs,

照这样再弄四个鸡蛋，

and then we'll mix up the egg whites.

然后咱们把蛋清混合在一起。

Child: This is the fun part.

宝宝：这个真有意思。

Mom: Start beating the egg whites

妈妈：开始打鸡蛋清，

and keep beating them until they're frothy and bubbly.

一直打到它们起沫和起泡为止。

Then you can add ½ teaspoon cream of tartar.

然后你加入½小勺的塔塔粉。

Child: Do I keep mixing?

宝宝：我要一直搅拌吗？

Mom: Yep. I'll add ¼ cup of sugar.

妈妈：对。我来加¼杯的糖。

Keep beating that mixture for another minute.

Child: What's next?

宝宝：然后呢？

Mom: Add in the egg yolks and another ½ cup of sugar.

Beat that for two minutes.

Child: It's starting to look like cake batter.

Mom: It sure is.

妈妈：是的。

Just one more ingredient.

Add in 1 teaspoon of almond extract.

加1小勺杏仁精。

Child: What do we do with the flour?

宝宝：那蛋糕粉有什么用呢？

Mom: Get a big spoon,

妈妈：拿一个大勺，

and we'll carefully add the flour mixture to the egg mixture.

咱们慢慢地把蛋糕粉混合物加到鸡蛋混合物里。

Do you think you can pour the finished batter into the pan?

你觉得你能把弄好的糊糊倒进蛋糕烤盘吗？

Child: I think so.

宝宝：我可以。

Mom: Once you're done,

妈妈：你倒好了之后，

we'll put the cake pan in the wok

咱们把蛋糕烤盘放进锅，

老外用咱中国的炒锅蒸蛋糕，很有创意......

and let it steam for 20 to 25 minutes.

蒸20到25分钟。

Then we'll let the cake cool on a rack before turning it out onto a plate

然后咱们把蛋糕放进盘子之前，先把它放到架子上冷却，

and removing the parchment paper.

取下羊皮纸。

Child: I can't wait.

宝宝：我等不急了。

I'll get some plates and forks ready for when the cake is done.

蛋糕好了之后我再准备一些盘子和叉子。
